In the current world in which we all live today, our health is not what it used to be when compared to the time of our great grandparents. Bacteria, fungi, and some hosts of other bacterial pathogens have eaten deep into the root of our body’s defense system while also taking shelter and mutating these bacteria drugs and using it against them so that they have no effects on them again. And these drugs resistance bacteria are known as the AMR (antimicrobial resistance) bacteria. However today a new tide is here with the introduction of the AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa these AMR can be curbed through the sensitization and preventive measures that are to be passed down to all students that will be joining these programs.

About the AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa
As a nine-month fenced program, the AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa seeks to empower students at all levels of tertiary education across a variety of faculties in all countries on the African continent to be active and effective advocates of AMR prevention and control. Students enrolled in health-related courses, as well as those enrolled in courses not related to health care, are encouraged to participate in the program. Both types of students are expected to be engaged and empowered through this program. With the support of the PAR Foundation, Students Against Superbugs Africa has been implementing the program with the help of the organization.
At Students Against Superbugs Africa, we are passionate about the fight against antimicrobial resistance and believe that each of us can play a part in putting an end to it. Especially in the African continent, we are passionate about demonstrating that collaborative engagement between young people can yield highly successful results through multidisciplinary approaches. There is no restriction as to who may apply for this scholarship irrespective of the course that they are pursuing or the profession that they are entering. The Antimicrobial Resistance pandemic is a serious threat to all of us, which is why each one of us has an important role to play in fighting it.

The AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa is divided into three major phases
PHASE 1 OF THE PROGRAM
During this phase, the project will run from September 2022 until the end of December 2022. A commitment of approximately 8 – 9 hours of time each week will be expected from participants.
It is anticipated that Phase 1 will serve as a foundation and cornerstone for providing all participants with a thorough understanding of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the challenges that contribute to the growth of the disease, the steps that can be taken to curb this pandemic, as well as other global health issues which have a cross-cutting impact. This phase of the training will lead to each participant having a solid understanding of Antimicrobial Resistance as well as the complexity that is associated with this phenomenon.
Through targeted activities, participants will also be provided with essential skills that they will be able to use in their daily lives. In order for young people to reveal their potential and become leaders, these skills will help to develop sustainable and effective engagement with actions targeted at curbing AMR in a sustainable and effective way.

PHASE 2 OF THE PROGRAM
Duration and time commitment: this duration of this phase will run from January 2023 and will end the following month February 2023. All applying candidates are required to be serious for an average of 7 to 8 hours each week during the program.
The candidates will transition into topics in phase 2 of this program and these topics will be focused more on effective course project management and designing. Due to the knowledge equipped to the students, they will be put on a challenge to identify how course and professional fields will contribute to microbial resistance mitigation. The major reason for this phase is to foster innovation and creativity.
In this phase, 3 to 5 participants were brought together to come up with reasonable ideas and strategies that could help to alleviate the antimicrobial resistance from various sides of view. Just like we said this phase will be in groups and each group will be given a mentor and coach to guide them through the process.
Now, all of the groups all together will have to present their work in a workshop that will be hosting many stakeholders in the AMR. Lastly, the stakeholders will be given the opportunity to see the proposals thus helping them all by refining and improving the intervention process and also help them facilitate the intervention
PHASE 3 OF THE PROGRAM
In order to achieve their goals of this phase in the program, participants are expected to devote an estimated eight to nine hours a week to accomplish their objectives during this phase. This phase is expected to take place starting at the beginning of March 2023 and ending at the end of April 2023.
The participants of this phase will be participating in both virtual as well as physical activities during this phase. A significant part of the program is that participants will work with local mentors in the communities where they live for the majority of the time. The group activities that will be taken place during this phase will be based of the groups that the participants applied for and the activities will be organized in accordance with the groups in which they applied.
For each group, the amount offered will be a maximum of 750 Euros (inclusive of transaction costs), equivalent to an estimated amount of funding that could be made available within the country of their origin. As a result of this grant, the participants will have the opportunity to develop ideas, seek additional funding, and implement a creative project that will provide the participants with the skills they need to kick-start sustainable and catalytic AMR activities in their institutions, as well as in their surrounding communities and institutions with the aid of this funding.
By the end of this program, students will be able to draw on the insights and experiences they gained from their projects to formulate a post-program intervention involving the establishment of local youth networking clubs at tertiary institutions across Africa as a result of their projects.

How to apply for the AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa
In order to ensure the feasibility and success of the different types of activities that the participants are going to undertake during the program, several unique aspects of the application have been designed to be considered. In order to apply to the program for the first time, our team strongly encourages you to review the guidelines and understand how the application process works before proceeding. Guidelines for Applying to the AMR Ambassadors Program for Young People in Africa
- All students who are enrolled in a university or college based in Africa are eligible to apply for the program, which is free of charge.
- Students may apply for the program if they are currently enrolled in a tertiary institution (college or university) at the time they apply for the program.
- There is a need for groups to apply for the program in order for the program to be considered.
- There should be at least 5 members in each group.
- As a general rule, each group should have a designated leader who will be in charge of ensuring that the team members gather the required information and submit it on their behalf.
- During the implementation process of the project, a mentor from the local area will be required, such as a lecturer or expert professional, whose role will be to help guide the group in implementing the project.
- It is also recommended that the mentor writes a recommendation letter for the group and expresses in it his/her willingness to assist and guide them in the future.
- There should be three members of the group who come from health-affiliated courses and two members who come from non-health-affiliated courses as part of the group
- There are a number of courses associated with health, but the term “health-affiliated courses” is used here to refer to any courses associated with these subjects: Medicine & Surgery, Pharmacy, Nursing, Microbiology, and Laboratory Sciences.
- There are also some other health-related courses that are not listed above (e.g. veterinary courses), but we will be treating all other courses as “non-health associated” in terms of the application in order to encourage multidisciplinary engagement.
- There are a number of reasons why we strongly encourage members of a group to be from the same tertiary institutions (university, college, technical training institute, vocational school). Nevertheless, even if the group members are from different institutions, they should be from institutions that are close enough to each other so that the collaborative implementation of a local project can be accomplished by all members of the group. Also, each member should have access to the local mentor’s focal institution
- During the application process, students will be required to provide student identification cards as part of the verification process as part of the process of confirming that they are currently enrolled in the institution they wish to study at.
